Zhang rallies past Lepchenko to reach Tokyo semifinals

ZHANG Shuai of China overcame Varvara Lepchenko of the United States 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-3 at the Japan Women’s Open yesterday to remain on course for her second career title.
Zhang was the highest remaining seed at No. 6. In the semifinals, she will face Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic, who defeated Alison Riske of the US 6-2, 6-4. The other semifinal will be between seventh-seeded American Christina McHale and Jana Cepelova of Slovakia.
