Zheng, Li advance in Warsaw
TOP-SEEDED Caroline Wozniacki retired with an injured ankle while trailing Zheng Jie of China 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the Warsaw Open in Poland yesterday.
In the semifinals, Zheng will face either Greta Arn of Hungary or sixth-seeded Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine.
In the other semifinal, third-seeded Li Na, also of China, will face Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania, who advanced after defeating Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria 6-4, 7-5. Li beat Sara Errani of Italy 6-2, 6-1.
In Nice, France, Leonardo Mayer of Argentina rallied to beat fifth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 yesterday and reach the semifinals of the Open de Nice.
The 23-year-old Mayer hit six aces but converted just three of his 24 break points before closing out the match in 2 hours, 55 minutes.
It was Mayer's first win over a top-30 player since last year's French Open, where he beat American James Blake in the first round.
The 59th-ranked Mayer will play his second career semifinal against either second-seeded Fernando Verdasco or Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine.
In Duesseldorf, Germany, Bob and Mike Bryan gave the United States a 2-1 win over Spain on Wednesday by winning the decisive doubles at the World Team Cup.
It was the Americans' second straight group stage victory, and they will play the Czech Republic for a spot in tomorrow's final.
After the teams split the singles matches on Tuesday, the Bryan twins beat Daniel Gimeno-Lopez and Marc Lopez 6-3, 7-5 to end Spain's hopes of reaching the final.
Also in the Red Group, the Czechs beat Australia 2-1 after Tomas Berdych clinched the series with a 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over Carsten Ball.
Berdych had expected to face Lleyton Hewitt, who withdrew with a stomach problem. Berdych struggled against Ball and had to save eight of the nine break points he faced before closing out the match with an ace.
"You are just preparing all day to play Lleyton Hewitt, you get some tactics or whatever, strategy, and then just change it in the last moment," Berdych said.
In the Blue Group, France beat Serbia 2-1 and will play Argentina for a spot in the final. The Argentines overcame Germany by the same score, despite trailing 0-1 after Tuesday's singles match.
