Zheng heads to US for wrist surgery

ZHENG Jie of China is set to have surgery to repair a nagging injury to her left wrist and could be sidelined for the rest of the year.

China Open tournament organizers said yesterday that Zheng had withdrawn from next week's event in Beijing in order to fly to the United States for surgery after her injury was found to have worsened during the US Open. She was knocked out in the second round by Ana Ivanovic at Flushing Meadows, but reached the semifinals in doubles. "I had been suffering from the injury the whole year," Zheng said. The 23rd-ranked Zheng is set to miss November's Asian Games in Guangzhou.
