Zvonareva trounces Wozniacki

VERA Zvonareva trounced Caroline Wozniacki 6-1, 6-0 in 58 minutes at the Hong Kong Classic exhibition tournament yesterday, winning a clash of the world's top two female players ahead of the Australian Open.

The second-ranked Russian broke in the first and fifth games to go up 4-1. Wozniacki saved a set point at 5-1 but missed a forehand to give her opponent the set.

The Danish world No. 1 had two break points in the first game of the second set but couldn't convert either, and then the momentum shifted to Zvonareva, who took the match on her second match point.

Zvonareva dictated play throughout, striking winners at will and showing impressive control at the net. The 26-year-old Russian finished with 23 winners compared to Wozniacki's seven.

For Zvonareva, the win was a confidence-booster as she looks to win her first major in Melbourne after consecutive finals at Wimbledon and the US Open last year.

In New Zealand, unheralded Greta Arn completed her giant-killing run and claimed her second WTA Tour title when she beat champion and second seed Yanina Wickmayer 6-3, 6-3 at the ASB Classic in Auckland yesterday.

The 31-year-old Hungarian, who had expected to arrive in Auckland and play qualifiers before a raft of withdrawals promoted her into the main draw, had earlier knocked out three other seeded players on her way to the final.

The world No. 88 was steady rather than explosive and helped by Wickmayer's numerous unforced errors throughout the match, though she faced a severe attack of nerves when she was serving for the title.

She went 0-30 down and served two double faults during the game, including one on match point, but managed to overcome them.

"When I had the match point and I did a double fault, (I) was shaking," she told reporters. "I told myself just hit it. If it's in, it's in, if it's out' it's going to be out anyway, so just hit it."

Arn, whose previous other WTA tour title was at Estoril, Portugal, in 2007, said the victory in Auckland was a "dream come true."

In Perth, Australia, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and John Isner beat Belgium's Justine Henin and Ruben Bemelmans 6-1, 6-3 to give the United States a 2-1 victory and its sixth Hopman Cup mixed teams title.
