Adidas scores 60 sporty years

THIS year marks the 60th anniversary of the iconic three stripes of Adidas which was created by company founder Adi Dassler back in 1949. For many decades, the German sports apparel company has been outfitting the world in its signature stripes, from sporting wear to street wear styles.

Last Friday, five pairs of huge Adidas sneakers, paying homage to the trefoil brand's distinctive styles in the past six decades, arrived in Shanghai.

They were on display in front of Shanghai Science and Technology Museum in Pudong, where five blue, ball-shaped tents were set up to "Celebrate 60 years of Soles and Stripes" - the theme of the night.

Rather than go through a runway show, Adidas hosted a "house party," inviting renowned Japanese designer Kazuki Kuraishi (who has recently designed a capsule collection for the brand), American rapper Amanda Blank, Beijing-based hip hop band IN3 and thousands of its loyal fans to experience a night defined by champagne, great music and lots of fun.

Top Chinese models Liu Wen, Mo Wandan, Qin Shupei and Xu Liwen danced on the central stage with a group of performers, all dressed in the latest spring/summer 2009 collection by Adidas Originals.

The brand has launched a new men's sub-collection called "Vespa," which was created in partnership with the Italian pop icon scooter manufacturer. It introduces vintage style polo shirts, jackets and footwear to both classic scooter riders and all fans of casual and clean design.

With "80s Preppy Casual," the brand reviews its history in the 1980s pop culture, while a comprehensive women's line of mix-and-match styles is designed for girls who go from sport to street to style looks.

The already well-received "sleek" collection for women further develops the fusion of street wear and elegance, presenting peep-toe high heels for the first time.

Meanwhile, the "Select Pack" introduces a range of women's statement pieces, all presented in Adidas Original's characteristic colors of blue/white, such as the bold 3-Stripes dress and the luxurious 3-Stripes leather jacket.

The much-coveted Originals Denim by Diesel collaboration introduces a new collection of 12 styles featuring subtle trefoil stitching. Women's shorts were launched to meet the demands of a hot summer.

Adidas is well known for its wide collaboration with artists of various genres and brands from different industries.

Most recently, its crossover products with German luxury car maker Porsche were also unveiled in Shanghai, at the inauguration of the city's first Porsche Design store.

Launched in 2007, the Porsche Design Sport Collection is a unique fusion of engineered luxury and sport performance. The products divided into five categories including "Driving," "Running/Fitness," "Water/Snow," "Golf" and "Tennis."

Models displayed the new collection featuring a classic palette of black, white and titanium as well as light sand, cedar green and light scarlet.

Apart from fashion, the 115-square-meter standalone store on Huaihai Road also sells a complete range of Porsche Design products including luggage, smoking accessories, jewelry, mobile phones and writing tools.
