Book fair open 12 hours a day this year

The 2013 Shanghai Book Fair, which runs from August 14 to 20, promises book fans a great time — and hours will be extended until late in the evening.

Held at the Shanghai Exhibition Center, the book fair eatures more than 500 publishers and over 150,000 books.

To encourage more readers to take part in this book gala, the fair also sets up venues at Shanghai Library, Sinan Mansion and libraries and cultural centers in each district.

Hours will be extended to 12 daily, from 9am to 9pm, especially important because of this summer’s heat wave and the difficulty office workers find in attending during weekdays. Previously, the seven-day fair was open to visitors at nights only on Friday and weekends.

The book fair attracts dozens of domestic and international authors and critics. Domestic authors include novelist and short story writer Jia Pingwa, and novelists Han Shaogong and Su Tong. There are also more than 10 first-rate foreign authors including Austrian novelist Peter Handke, Englishman Geoff Dyer and Italian Paolo Giordano, author of “The Solitude of Prime Numbers.”

The fair also is emphasizing children’s novels. It offers sun rooms and cell phone charging stations to make the reading experience more comfortable.

Date: August 14-20, 9am-9pm

Tickets: 10 yuan for daytime and 5 yuan for evening entry at 6pm. Tickets will be available at the exhibition gate.

Venue: Shanghai Exhibition Center

Address: 1000 Yan’an Rd M.
