Extreme games promise extreme fun

KIA Motors Corp and FOX SPORTS Event Management have renewed their partnership to launch a brand-new exciting action sports event, the inaugural Kia World Extreme Games.

This prestigious multi-action sports event will take place over four thrilling days from today to June 12 at the KIC Jiangwan Sports Center, in Shanghai's Yangu District.

Following the success of six consecutive extreme games competitions in Shanghai, FOX SPORTS Event Management (formerly ESPN STAR Sports Event Management Group), now part of FOX International Channels (FIC) Asia, News Corporation's international multimedia business and Asia's leading pay-TV network, has collaborated with title sponsor Kia Motors once again in a three-year deal that will take Asia's biggest action sports event to a new world-class status.

The Kia World Extreme Games will continue the tradition of previous extreme games competitions in featuring a world-class line-up.

Around 200 of the world's top action sports athletes from some 30 countries and regions will be competing for glory and a huge prize purse of US$260,000 - a 60 percent increase on 2012.

The inaugural Kia World Extreme Games will feature an increase of competition categories from three to five, with the latest additions being FMX Step-up and Speed Climbing.

The latter category is set to feature a quality field of top Chinese athletes competing against the world's best speed climbers.

The FMX Step-up competition will also showcase some of the world's best action sports riders in gravity-defying stunts.

Competitions on the vert and street course will feature BMX, skateboarding and aggressive in-line skating, with the world's top BMX and skateboard athletes competing for gold medals on the huge Mini Mega Ramp.

Fans can expect familiar names and the return of top action sports stars.

These include the incredibly talented 13-year-old skateboarder Tom Schaar from the United States, Australian BMX gold medallist Vince Byron riding the Mini Mega Ramp, the ever-popular Yasutoko brothers from Japan competing in the Aggressive In-line vert, along with four-time X Games gold medallist Tommy Clowers, flying high in the FMX Step-up, to name a few.

The Kia World Extreme Games will also be broadcast live on locations across FOX SPORTS networks across Asia, as well as on Shanghai Media Group's Great Sports channel.

As part of the FIC network, the Games will also be broadcast in the USA, Latin America, Australia, Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Simeon Dawes, senior vice president of Fox One Stop Media, FIC's integrated advertising sales arm said: "As a long-term partner organizing extreme sports events with Kia Motors, we now as FOX SPORTS Event Management with the full backing from FOX International Channels, are more committed than ever before to taking this world-class competition to even greater heights.

"As part of the FIC network, Asia's biggest action sports competition will now be able to reach out to even more countries across the globe, adding exponentially more value for our sponsors," said Dawes. "We fully intend to build on the global success of the Games as the pinnacle of action sports and provide fans with a sporting experience that they will not stop talking about!"

Tae-Hyun (Thomas) Oh, executive vice president and COO of Kia Motors said: "We are pleased that we are able to continue our successful collaboration with the team at FOX SPORTS Event Management, and to sponsor this event that over the years, has become not only popular in Asia, but amongst audiences all over the world.

"It has proven to be an ideal platform in increasing the recognition of the Kia brand among the younger generation, who have actually also grown up with the event since the start of our partnership in 2007. The Kia World Extreme Games signals the advent of a new era, and we look forward to it."

Since 2007, the competition has attracted near 330,000 visitors and is expected to draw another large crowd in this year's brand new edition.

Visitors to this year's Kia World Extreme Games can expect a bigger festival atmosphere in the "Interactive Zone," where a slew of exciting acts, such as breakdance performances, rock band shows, DJs spinning the latest chart-topping tracks are lined up to entertain the crowd.

Fans can also get hands-on tryouts at the interactive arena with sport climbing, participate in many other fun-filled games and stand to win prizes.

On stage, rousing entertainment acts this year include Benny Shao, DJ Tin Tin, the return of Rex Yu & Naughty Volunteer, and Andrew Cheung as Kia World Extreme Games' event ambassador, who penned this year's event theme song "Shake It."
