Japan's street chic has bohemian vibe

GWEN Stefani's dolled-up Harajuku Girls are so 2004. Today's Japanese street-chic style works an urban bohemian vibe in which layering and prints are key. Inspired by Hollywood celebrity styles, adding a dash of their own fashion statement, young people in Tokyo have boldly thrown paisley and plaid sundresses over T-shirts, or a cropped denim vest over a two-tone tank.

The maxi dress has proved to be most Hollywood stars' fashion staple in summer. Lightweight, flowing and floor length, it exudes glamor, elegance and the ultimate bohemian spirit. It is a style that can be worn day or night, dressed down with sandals and sunglasses or dressed up with heels and sparkling jewelry.

While Hollywood celebrities often wear the maxi dress as one piece, young Japanese girls tend to wear it with a tank and a pair of sandals -- the perfect gear for a long day of shopping. The craze for leggings has passed from the Japanese teenage trend-setters to almost everyone. Apart from vivid colors, the leggings also come in all kinds of interesting patterns. Japanese fast-fashion giant Uniqlo has even launched a style of body-hugging denim pants in the form of leggings.

The leggings are often worn with long, layered tops. Japanese girls have combined tank tops, camisoles and long necklaces to create a layered look. The jumpsuit has been a must-have fashion piece for ages and this summer, cute floral jumpsuits have been seen on many cute Japanese girls in various street fashion shots. Jumpsuits help to elongate the legs when worn with a pair of heels or wedges. Wear it with a cute hat, or belt it up for a more sophisticated layered look.Denim is one of the hottest fashion trends this summer, and most likely, it will still be in autumn and winter.

Wear a denim shirt with a feminine dress in floral patterns, or one made of pure lace to add some "power" to the otherwise too soft and sweet look, or throw a cropped denim vest over a normal tank for a layered effect. The guy pictured right has successfully carried out the "wear denim over denim" trend. And he is smart enough to choose denim pants and vest in different tones so they won't look like a boring set.
