Last stop Thailand
THE Expo is heading toward to its end and so is Munching Matilda. In two months I munched through Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa but before heading back to my home in Sweden, I decided another round in Asia was just the thing. So my last Expo lunch was at the outdoor restaurant of the Thailand Pavilion. The lively atmosphere felt very Asian with the plastic tables and chairs and the crowd of people. The service was very fast, almost the moment I was seated the food was on the table and I was spoiled as always with plenty of dishes.
I started with the Pathai, a very famous noodle dish in which the noodles are fried together with vegetables and egg. This time it came with shrimp and was served with fresh coriander. A little bit spicy and very munchy! Another dish was the even spicier lemon grass noodle soup with shrimp. A lot of chili and garlic combined with lemon grass made an interesting taste combination. A second soup had a base of curried coconut milk with cumin-spiced noodles, both soft and fried. Beneath the noodles were tender pieces of chicken, a nice surprise.
There was a plate of sliced pork, to dip in a chili sauce. Good but perhaps not great when compared with the sticky rice. The rice is a short-grained Asian variety that is especially sticky when cooked and quite sweet. Sticky rice is very common in Southeast Asia and at the Thailand Pavilion restaurant it was served as a complement to wonderful grilled chicken and a spicy Thai papaya salad. Very delicious!
