Mendes to make China debut in Shanghai

GRAMMY-NOMINATED and multiple platinum singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes has pencilled in a Shanghai date as part of his world tour. It will be the 20-year-old’s first visit to China.

Mendes, who has Portuguese-English ethnicity, was born in Toronto and cited Ed Sheeran, Justin Timberlake and John Mayer as his main musical influences.

He first came to the public’s attention for making six-second renditions of popular songs on the video-sharing app, Vine, in 2013.

It led to him being discovered by artist manager Andrew Gertler. A year later he officially signed to Island Records. Since the release of his first single “Life of the Party” in 2014, which made him the youngest artist to debut in the top 25 on the US Billboard’s hot 100, the multi-talented star has gone on a sky-rocketing trajectory.

In 2015, Mendes released his first full-length album “Handwritten,” which debuted in the top ten of the US Billboard 200 chart and was certified platinum in its first week. He then became the youngest artist to debut at number one since Justin Bieber’s “My World 2.0.”

In 2016, he released his second album “Illuminate,” with tracks like the triple platinum “Treat You Better” and double platinum “Mercy.”

His self-titled album arrived in 2018 to critical acclaim, with particular praise toward his songwriting and artistic growth. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 album chart, as well as multiple additional worldwide markets, including Australia, Canada, Mexico, Belgium and the Netherlands, and shot to number one on iTunes in more than 80 countries immediately upon release.

Mendes has completed two sold-out world tours with over 1 million tickets sold, selling out legendary stadiums and arenas including NYC’s Madison Square Garden and London’s O2 Arena in minutes.

“I want to create anthems for people. I want to create anthems for big moments in their lives,” said Mendes.

After the US and his home country Canada, he will come to Shanghai for a magical night of soft, soulful pop classics before embarking for countries like Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
