New treats in old market street
PREVIOUSLY known internationally for its extensive imitation goods market, Xiangyang Road used to be one of Shanghai's favorite tourist destinations. Now, the spot where mostly clothes and watches were sold is slowly transforming into a quiet business district. The majority of its high-rise buildings include offices but small shops and eateries neatly line the road. Keep a lookout for Xiangyang Park, which is a great place to find some quiet time and get away from the hustle and bustle of the nearby Huaihai Road.
My Way to ethnic treasure
The scent of incense and soothing melodies waft through My Way, a downtown boutique filled with ethnic treasure from Southeast Asia. With paper lampshades dangling from the ceilings, dyed hangings and tapestries from Nepal and India covering the walls, the shop feels like a stop on the hippie trail. Owner Gu Jiangang, who opened the store in 2004, has stocked it with ethnic artifacts, textiles and accessories from his travels in Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Nepal. It is filled with a jumble of eye-catching clothing in bright colors and natural fabrics and jewelry in vogue with Shanghai's jeunesse d'oree. And even if the head-to-toe hippie look is too much, some of the pieces designed by the owner will brighten and enliven any outfit. Here, visitors can enjoy the photographs on the walls, pick their favorite pieces and perhaps plan their own trip to this fascinating region. My Way will open its second shop very soon on Wukang Road, opposite Ferguson Lane.

Nanxiang's Tea varieties
While tea shops are a dime a dozen in a place like Shanghai, top-quality tea leaves may be hard to find. At Nanxiang's, they specialize in pu'er and tieguanyin tea. The leaves they bring in are usually older, so the brew is stronger and better. Apart from these two signature tea leaves, the shop also has many other varieties, giving a luxury of choices. Regulars make up most of the customers, which attests to the quality of products. Free sampling is provided, with an introduction and explanation of the tea to help decide which one to buy. And as you shop for tea leaves, check out the intricate tea sets also for sale.

P1 Coffee with art and more
Coffee with art is the concept behind this one-year-old cafe. Originally at Guangyuan Road, it relocated to Xiangyang Road barely a month ago. Photographs taken by Shanghai duo Birdhead adorn the walls, so you can enjoy the evocative images while sipping. The menu offers more than just coffee (Italian beans are 15-38 yuan per cup, or 22-30 yuan for a mug; estate coffee beans are 35 yuan per cup)-with other drinks, meals and desserts on offer. Desserts are all homemade - the cheese cake (22 yuan) and milk pudding (20 yuan) - are must-tries. For some real food, there are sandwiches, 9-inch thin crust pizzas and pastas among the options. Tables are well spaced and it is equipped with power points and wireless internet if you want to work. If you're looking to enjoy a leisurely summer afternoon, there are also seats outside in the small garden.
