Porcelain company basks in APEC glow

HUAGUANG porcelain is one of the best brands within the domestic ceramics industry as indicated by its appearance at banquets hosted by the Chinese government during the 2014 APEC summit.

Huaguang Porcelain Company goes back to the 1960s when it was founded in Zibo, Shandong Province.

It has been a slow process, but the company is gaining international recognition.

Company director Su Tongqiang said the selection process to become a porcelain provider for the APEC banquets was a massive challenge.

“The selection process started early in 2013,” he says. “There were several brands from Jingdezhen, Zhejiang Province, and Shanghai on the list. But the team organizing the APEC banquets was not fully satisfied.”

Eventually one of the organizers remembered Huaguang had won a gold medal at the International Innovation Conference at the International Academy of Ceramics in 2008.

“We were given a limited time to produce the 54 banquet items,” Su said, “What a task! My team members and I flew to Beijing several times to check on the venue, the lighting and even the dishes to decide what kind of patterns and shapes suited the event.”

The 54 banquet porcelain items range from wine vessel covers and dinner and bread plates to ice cream bowls and chopsticks holders.

Huaguang’s lead-free bone china pieces feature delicate designs that connect traditional Chinese culture to the present.

“Of course there were many color and shape adjustments to be made to each piece,” Su recalled.

“We also had many discussions with the chef to perfectly present the beauty of China’s porcelain and Chinese cuisine.”

Last month, Huaguang’s APEC Porcelain Collection was unveiled at the Shanghai International Conference Center, allowing the public to see the 54 pieces for the first time.

“The Shanghai International Conference Center was the first venue in China to host an APEC summit, so we think it’s a meaningful venue to display our porcelain,” Su said.

“We want to revive the glory of China’s china. This is a good beginning for Huaguang. We are confident we can build our porcelain into an internationally recognized brand in the future.”
