Quality boutique shops with charm

NANCHANG Road has continued to become more commercial over the years and it is now home to several new and appealing boutiques and shops. This week we continued our exploration of the street from the intersection of Ruijin Road and walked east. This more secluded section of the street feels more relaxed and somewhat removed from the hustle and bustle of Maoming Road S. Unique jewelry and fashion boutiques and an eclectic antique furniture shop are just a few examples of the latest that Nanchang Road has to offer.

S2VS

S2VS opened just over a year ago and is a men's brand that has been selling clothing to boutiques around the world since 2007. Warm and comfortable, the interior of the small boutique reflects the design of the clothing, which aims to emulate American style and aesthetics. Described by owner Sean William Salim as "urban and country, S2VS aims to provide simple designs that fit every season. There is a relatively wide selection of clothing, including coats, trousers, shirts and sweaters, which are made using quality fabrics in muted tones such as browns and greens. There is a variety of sizes, but they do not go up very big as they are aimed more toward Asian men. Shirts and trousers cost around 400 yuan and jackets are around 600 yuan. S2VS also features a selection of shoes and bags by various designers, including Sebago and Flying Scissors. The shoes are around 500 yuan and the leather travel bags are 400 yuan.

Nine

Nine is a small, Tibetan-style shop that opened in September. It is a real treasure, adding a more traditional element to the designer boutiques that line Nanchang Road. Nine was designed with a true passion for Tibetan culture and predominantly sells handmade Tibetan-style jewelry and ornaments made in Tibet. The jewelry is beautiful, made using a variety of stones and metals; prices range from 150 yuan to 600 yuan for necklaces and 100 yuan to 130 yuan for bracelets. Nine also sells framed mandoras, hand painted by Tibetan monks, for around 900 yuan each. The shop's interior is cosy and comfortable, providing a place to relax in a café-style environment. There is a selection of Tibetan tea and tea treats on offer, ranging in price from 39 yuan for a cup to 69 yuan for a pot and around 12 yuan for a small snack. A total of 15 percent of all profits go to a NGO, which helps cover education costs for less-privileged Tibetan students.

Yong Shang Art Space

If searching for old-world treasures is your thing, Yong Shang Art Space is worth exploring. Featuring old, collectable furniture mainly from 1930s old Shanghai, the shop is more like being in a home. And not surprisingly, it is decorated in an old Shanghai style. Each piece of furniture is well displayed from a 3,000-yuan Art Deco chair and a 10,000-yuan three-person couch to an old Shanghai table priced at about 22,000 yuan. Aside from the treasures from the 1930s era, the shop owner also sources vintage pieces from Europe and the United States. A vintage music box from Europe is priced at 5,000 yuan. They also provide interior design services for old villas.

There is a wide selection of rings in a variety of styles and sizes; prices range from 200 yuan (US$31.50) to 400 yuan. Necklaces cost between 300 yuan and 1,000 yuan and the majority of the earrings are around 150 yuan. The jewelry on sale is colorful and unique.
