Shanghai Museum 60th Anniversary
TO commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Shanghai Museum, four special exhibitions are being staged in the city's landmark exhibition hall.
The current Faberge Jewelry Art Exhibition showcases artwork by Russian master craftsman Karl Gustavovich Faberge (1846-1920). Exhibits include a 36-centimeter tall Easter egg that was a festive gift from Emperor Nicholas II to Empress Consort Alexandra Feodorovna.
Meanwhile, 90 pieces of blue and white porcelain from the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) from museums around the world will go on display for the Shanghai public this weekend. Yuan Dynasty porcelain has a reputation for its gorgeous patterns and unconstrained painting style. During this period, Jingde Town in Jiangxi Province gained international renown for its porcelain.
Also marking the 60th anniversary is a major exhibition of Chinese paintings, featuring 80 pieces - 60 of which are borrowed from renowned museums in the United States, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
In the fourth event, visitors can see mirror masterpieces from ancient China. Some 100 donated bronze mirrors, dating from the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BC) to Song Dynasty (960-1279), will be on display next month, illustrating the development of these mirrors in China.
