Slim and shiny beckons the boys

MEN'S fashion in Shanghai, compared with women's, is boring. Most men opt for either customised formal wear from ateliers along the street, because they are inexpensive, or H&M and Zara for the basic combo of T-shirts and jeans. Suits are inevitable pieces in a man's wardrobe and the keywords for this season, gleaned from two recent men's fashion shows, are slim cuts, high-tech feel, glittering fabrics and classic patterns.

Verri from Italy introduces the slim silhouette which is broad shouldered with a slim waist, to be matched with slim trousers. It is neither the "skinny boy" look which was once so popular, nor the "classic cut" that helps to hide a plump figure. It is in between, which is tailored to highlight the well-worked body, the perfect masculine V shape.

Leo from Hong Kong introduces metallic shining fabrics in a grayish palette. It suggests men to wear suits "separately" - the blazers might be slightly mismatched with the trousers.

For example, a light-gray jacket is paired with glittering dark-gray trousers. Even more bold is a white jacket with black trousers. And there's the return of classic clothes patterns, from herringbone to pinstripe.

Trench coats are a must-have for spring and the light, reversible garment is a worthy investment during the recession times, Leo suggests. Verri encourages men to crispy cuffed shorts. T-shirts are slim cut, featuring chic stripes and there are skinny, embroidered jeans.

Both Verri and Leo have stores at the Grant Gateway Mall in Xujiahui.
