Tips for a close shave

RED skin, burning, nicks, cuts, abrasions, razor bumps, blemishes and dried out skin -- just a few of the side effects from trying to get a clean, close shave.

There are now a number of quality shaving products specially designed to combat shaving irritations. And there are some simple rules that will minimize damage and improve shaving results.

Prep with an ex-foliator. A gentle scrubbing massage will help open pores, prime follicles and raise stubs for a closer shave.

Then, wash with soap and warm water to thoroughly clean skin.

Shave in or after a shower. Steam and warm water saturate hair with moisture and make skin more pliable for an easier shave. Shaving should be your final step before leaving the shower.

Apply shaving cream or gel -- don't overload -- against the direction hair grows to lubricate skin, maximize lift and ensure maximum coverage.

Use a sharp blade. Shave twice in the direction of hair growth. Discard shaving blades after four or five uses.

Shave in sections. Sideburns first, then cheeks and neck. Shave from base of the neck to jaw, then back down again, since neck hair grows in both directions. Save chin and upper lip for last, so thicker hairs in the area have a longer time to soften.

Avoid irritants. Stay away from alcohol or strong plant extracts such as peppermint or citrus. You need proven functional anti-inflammatory and pore-clearing ingredients. Control oil and breakout with daily cleansing and exfoliation.

Protect freshly shaven skin with an after-shave healing treatment or a moisturizer. And be sure to moisturize dry areas to help soothe skin for the next day's shave.

Don't forget sunscreen.
