Big-name artists in the frame at Shanghai Art Fair

The 2019 Shanghai Art Fair kicked off yesterday at the ShanghaiMart and the Shanghai Convention & Exhibition Center of International Sourcing.

The three-day fair, established in 1997, is now considered one of the oldest events of its kind in Asia. This year 110 galleries and art institutions from both home and abroad are participating, including 30 local galleries.

It’s the first time the Shanghai Art Fair is held in two of the city’s venues. The organizers revealed ShanghaiMart will focus on modern and contemporary artworks catering for professional collectors while the other will include more ink-wash paintings, ceramics and some art side-products for ordinary buyers. There will be shuttle buses traveling between the two venues every day during the fair.

For local art lovers, works created by a cluster of big-name artists, such as Damien Hurst, Jeff Koons, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali, can also be found at the fair.

In order to pay salute to the Chinese modern masters, Hong Art Museum has organized an exhibition featuring the paintings created by 25 artists, including Liu Haisu (1896-1994), Yan Wenliang (1894-1988) and Guan Liang (1900-1986).

Their oil canvases created from different periods and under different backgrounds offer a systematic presentation of the aesthetics of Chinese impressionistic oil paintings.

Since 2006, the “Recommended Chinese Young Artists” section has been introduced by the fair to the public. This year, the fair gives a retrospective show of those young artists who got started on their career path at the fair.

This year also marks the 70th anniversary of the diplomatic relationship between China and Russia.

A special exhibition featuring 24 oil paintings created by 14 top local artists, who were strongly influenced by the Russian oil paintings in their early days of learning, such as Chen Junde and Chen Yifei, will be on show during the fair. The exhibition will later travel to the State Russian Museum in St Petersburg.
