Opening of jewelry exhibit hailed a success

MORE than 100 guests showed up for the opening ceremony of a jewelry exhibition at Grand Kempinski Hotel Shanghai on Tuesday afternoon. The opening of the exhibition “Sundry flowers among trees”, co-organized by Shanghai Daily’s Art Vision Project, new media platform Top Tier, art agency Green Kin and Grand Kempinski Hotel Shanghai, offered a chance to talk directly to the jewelry designer and to try on her beautiful art works.

Guests included consul generals in Shanghai and their wives, consular representatives from seven consulates, representatives from chambers of commerce, multinational corporations, financial institutions and high net worth clients, who were all warmly welcomed to the opening ceremony.

The exhibition features Zhang Lijun’s exquisite jewelry designs — a perky mix of rustic elements with metals like gold and silver as well as with more traditional Chinese jewelry elements like jade and porcelain.

At the opening show, Zhang shared her creative ideas and suggestions on tips of how to match jewelry pieces with daily outfits. She also picked out an elegant pair of jade earrings for Mrs Hudak, wife of consul general at Consulate General of Slovakia. “The most important part of wearing jewelry pieces is to keep it simple. And you should always have confidence in yourself,” explained Zhang.

“It’s a great chance for me to meet new friends and discuss our passion for jewelry together,” said Zhang.

Models from Shanghai Daily showed honored guests the exquisite and charming jewelry pieces which are a combination of traditional Chinese culture and modern fashion.

In many ways, the jewelry of designer Zhang is emblematic of her native Suzhou. It’s modern and elegant and strives to combine the old with the new. Her passion for traditional Chinese culture and old art objects as well as the picturesque Suzhou Gardens, which she says have helped form her style, are all mirrored in her jewelry design.

“We Chinese have one of the best cultures in the world. We should always be proud of that and listen to ourselves to do what we really want,” said Zhang.

Walking the streets of Suzhou, Zhang is always on the lookout for small antiques and, by incorporating them into her designs, she gives them a second life instead of just restoring their old beauty. “I will never restore or repair the old jewelry to what it used to be. Instead, I want to use them to create a modern jewelry which is suitable for wearing nowadays,” said Zhang.

Zhang’s combinations come naturally and are spontaneous — Zhang says she follows her feelings and instincts in creating her designs.

The jewelry exhibition provides Zhang a platform to display her art to a new international and domestic audience.

“We are keen to stimulate more of these kinds of exhibitions in our hotel as it will inspire people. And we are proud to be associated with this program,” said hotel GM Henk Meyknecht. “Zhang’s combination of jade and pearls into jewelry is highly appreciated and should appeal to our guests.”

Kempinski Hotels has a long tradition of supporting the arts. Several years ago, they launched the “Young Artist Program” providing financial support in the form of fellowships to young and upcoming European and Asian artists. This program was established to support young talent in the arts. Its mission is to further cross cultural education in the arts, to join art organizations, to increase cultural awareness and to fulfill Kempinski’s commitment to refinement and culture. The fellowships are in two areas: classical music and visual arts. The program director is Marylea van Daalen, who recently visited Shanghai and was very impressed with the art scene in the city.

Chinese art has come a long way in the past few decades and is currently recognized as serious influence in the global arts scene, said Meyknecht.

“We are especially keen to promote Chinese artists focusing on sculptures, paintings, pottery. Our hotel welcomes many international guests and it is a great opportunity for young and upcoming artists to display their craft in our hotel in Shanghai,” he said.

The exhibition is among more than 20 art events which was organized by Art Vision and Top Tier. These events aim to combine high quality art with a high-end hotel environment and offer a platform for discussion for guests.
