A cradle of Cantonese cuisine in a modest setting

THE newly opened Reng Xing Ji has been in the food and wine circle spotlight recently thanks to some rave reviews written by opinion leaders.

It is reminiscent of a modest Cantonese restaurant often found in Hong Kong because of its relatively small scale and retro decoration. The two-floor eatery on the food-centered Dingxi Road is ideal for small group gatherings.

Reng Xing Ji specializes in regional Shunde cuisine. Shunde, a district in Foshan City, is regarded as the cradle of Cantonese cuisine chefs, and food from Shunde is widely known as the best from Guangdong Province. Shunde food pays special attention to retaining the genuine flavors and textures of its ingredients and elaborate preparations that bring out those inherent flavors.

Shunde is blessed with a wide selection of fish dishes. We started off with fried fish cake in Shunde style that was pleasing in color and flavor and it opened up our appetite. There is an appealing selection of cooked fish such as fish head in clay pot, deep fried yellow croaker, steamed boneless fish and boiled fish with pickles. We opted for the most notable dish, Shunde-style fish in a big pan.

The smaller portion is priced at 388 yuan. It is a big pot containing a whole freshwater fish from Qiandao Lake accompanied by well-cooked and seasoned shrimp, clams and chicken meat. The generous use of celery, garlic and scallion also give bold, fragrant flavors to everything in the pot. It was a deeply satisfying dish perfect for four people to share.

The stewed goose in special sauce was another highlight. The chosen goose features intense flavor with mostly lean meat and soaks up the flavorsome sauce without overpowering its original taste. There are many more delicious dishes on the menu. It’s such a shame you can never try everything during one visit. But it is a restaurant worth coming back to.

Its popularity makes it difficult to secure a table, so booking is essential and make sure you arrive on time.
