A slice of New York near Zhongshan Park

HOMESLICE — a neighborhood pizzeria specializing in slices — recently opened its second outlet near Zhongshan Park, a welcome addition to this rapidly developing area of Shanghai.

Nathaniel Alexander opened the first Homeslice store in popular food and beverage complex Found 158 on Julu Road, appealing to those who prefer simple fare and socializing in the evenings.

Homeslice specializes in New York-style pizzas, and in New York one can get slices everywhere. The interior graphics are inspired by the New York metro system and give off a cool, chilled vibe for a quick bite.

“The new store has more pizzas available by the slice, serving 11 kinds at the time, including the full range of seasonal pizzas. We also offer a more limited range of drinks than the Found 158 store,” he said.

This store has a self-service Coca-Cola machine for that all-American experience. Aperol spritz is served on draft, alongside a changing selection of beers.

The quality continues to impress and it’s obvious Alexander can’t help trying to perfect different elements. Everything is about maximizing the flavor of the dough. They use a sour dough starter and very little yeast and then ferment their dough balls for at least 48 hours at a very low temperature.

While slices of pizza are usually served on paper plates, Homeslice aims to lessen its environmental impact, using non-disposable plates and cups in-store.

The most appealing side of Homeslice is their seasonal new pizza selection available for a limited period.

The Al Pastor pizza has been created by guest chef Scott Melvin of the Shanghai Edition. His pizza is a take on the Mexican dish Tacos Al Pastor (marinated pork roasted on a rotating spit and served on a taco with roasted pineapple and salsa).

This pizza version features a white onion base, topped with slow roasted pork and pineapple, jalapenos and avocado crema.

The Al Pastor pizza was my favorite from my recent tastings and it has achieved the perfect balance of flavors.

Homeslice says it donates 10 percent of its guest chef pizza sales to Stepping Stones, or 42,000 yuan in the first year.

As this is the season in which St Patrick’s day falls, Homeslice is offering Craic pizza influenced by the flavors of the Emerald Isle — a white base topped with potatoes, leeks and mature Irish cheddar.

I ordered an add-on of smoked cured Sichuan pork on top of this vegetarian version and it was very tasty.
