A street with loads of charm

THE section of Taojiang Road which runs from Dongping Road to Hengshan Road is attractive and peaceful. Tree lined streets and beautiful, European style buildings make for a very pleasant shopping experience. This week we discover a vintage cafe and spiritual vegetarian restaurant, as well as lifestyle boutiques and an affordable yoga studio, all of which mirror the calm atmosphere of this part of the former French concession.

Cottage Cafe

Set inside a quaint, European style building, Cottage Cafe provides a nice environment to relax, eat or work. Wi-Fi is provided, as well as a selection of books on a variety of topics. The interior is vintage with three floors and seating for up to 40 people. The basement serves as a showroom for vintage furniture sold in a boutique on Wulumuqi Road, owned by the same person. There is a variety of different types of coffee priced between 30 yuan (US$4.71) and 40 yuan, as well as fresh fruit smoothies for 35 yuan and wine priced at 40 yuan. The food is simple and wholesome; soups are 25 yuan and sandwiches are around 40 yuan. Cottage Cafe also has a small selection of mains including pasta and rice dishes that cost between 30 yuan and 35 yuan.

Sun Home

Sun Home is a lifestyle boutique which produces its own furniture made in China. The shop has been open for three years and offers a mix of traditional Chinese and modern European styles. Sun Home also offers some antique furniture such as a beautiful, wooden Chinese cabinet which costs 13,000 yuan (US$2,041). European style sofas are made using bright colors and luxurious fabrics, including leather and velvet. The furniture boutique also offers a range of ornaments costing between 400 yuan and 2,000 yuan. Rugs are made using a variety of styles and fabrics, including intricate Indian designs that cost 1,200 yuan per square meter. Sun Home provides an eclectic mix of furniture designs which appeal to a variety of style preferences.

The Villa

The high-end women's fashion boutique The Villa is situated at the corner of Taojiang and Dongping roads. Housed in an old building, the store blends vintage and modern decor, providing an exclusive shopping experience for discerning customers. The boutique carries international designer labels and offers a carefully edited selection of the latest styles from the season. The boutique is currently providing holiday gift boxes for Christmas and Chinese New Year including one set with a Rag & Bone's scarf priced at 2,950 yuan (US$463) and another set with a Yigal Azrouel scarf at 3,500 yuan. The Villa is also working on an e-commerce site.

Anna Maya Vegetarian Cafe

Anna Maya Vegetarian Cafe opened on Taojiang Road almost three years ago. Inspired by the Indian state Kerala and with a Buddhist influence, this vegan cafe provides delicious and wholesome food. The cafe offers a surprisingly vast selection of homemade, macrobiotic meals using predominantly organic ingredients. The range of cuisines includes Japanese, Indian and Chinese. The set menu offers light, basic and full options which range from 68 yuan (US$10.67) to 110 yuan, all of which include a soup/salad and a soft drink. Vegetarian burgers cost around 50 yuan and curries are priced at 60 yuan. Connected to the cafe is a small yoga and meditation center.
