Cool Docks extension just perfect for chilling

FEATURING newly renovated warehouses and industrial-style buildings, Wai Ma Lu plays host to a variety of fashion and lifestyle boutiques, new restaurants and wineries. The riverside location and use of decking and terraces make this area of The Cool Docks a beautiful and relaxing place to spend an afternoon or evening. This extension of The Cool Docks is a relatively new discovery, check it out now, before the crowds come flocking. Sophie Turton and Yang Di pay a visit.
G Water Front
Shanghai is not short of Indian restaurants, yet G Water Front probably boasts the best views. As one of the new establishments along Shanghai's riverfront on Wai Ma Lu, the 200-seat restaurant offers delicious and authentic northern Indian cuisine. Entering into the second-floor dining area feels like being transported into a decorative palace in the most traditional and cultural Rajasthan region. Recommended dishes include fish tikka at 95 yuan (US$14.9), tandoori chicken (88 yuan), chicken with coconut, curry paste (88 yuan), saffron rice (55 yuan) to the hard-to-resist Indian breads like papadum, roti and naan. The lunch deal is attractive, for only 36 yuan you can have a choice of a soft drink or soup of the day, palak paneer or chicken curry, mixed vegetables, plain naan and steamed rice. The executive set lunch (108 yuan) is a great option for weekend brunch, with a choices including cheese chicken kebab, samosa, fish tikka, yellow dal, shrimp curry and saffron rice. The outdoor seats are always popular, so be sure to reserve in advance.

Sun Chateau
Wine, sun and riverside views - the perfect combination for a lazy summer afternoon. Sun Chateau hits the mark on all three, with a vast selection of high-quality wines from around the world, including favorites from Italy, New Zealand, the United States and Australia, though focusing predominantly on imports from France. Prices range from 150 to more than 10,000 yuan. The bottles are displayed on dark oak shelves and in glass cabinets - somewhat reminiscent of an Edwardian study - with a small seating area with a selection of plush armchairs and sofas. Sun Chateau plans to expand the seating area to allow for a more leisurely wine tasting experience. This riverside winery provides the perfect spot for hot summer days, with a beautiful terrace deck which is connected to an upstairs restaurant and overlooks the river. The restaurant, under the same name, specializes in Chinese food with a small Western influence, providing a selection of steaks and specialty desserts. Sun Chateau is a welcome treat for Shanghai-based wine lovers, providing a wide selection of high-quality wines across the prices ranges. And as a final touch to ensure that a lazy day sipping wine doesn't get too arduous, the layout of the shop allows for an easy selection process, as various vineyards and brands are grouped together.

The Steak and Oyster Bar
The Steak and Oyster Bar opened just under a year ago, an upmarket establishment offering a wide variety of high-quality seafood and steaks. The restaurant is American in concept, specializing in grilled dishes, and Chinese in style. The interior is simple yet elegant, with a long, sleek bar the focal point. With an extensive menu which covers all the basic steak options - including rib-eye and sirloin - plus an opulent oyster selection, The Steak and Oyster Bar has something to suit most taste preferences.
All seafood and steaks are imported, with a focus on Washington State in the United States. Oysters are imported twice a week, a heavy emphasis on highest quality control ensuring they are delivered straight from the airport to the restaurant. The oyster selection ranges from 22 to 40 yuan per oyster. Grain-fed steaks are priced between 150 and 500 yuan, and there is a variety of American-style side dishes to choose from. Additionally, a wide selection of imported wines and beers, as well as an extensive champagne collection, provide a perfect accompaniment. The Steak and Oyster Bar management says they offer a special combination of high-quality seafood which can be enjoyed in a beautiful and peaceful location.

Yaang Life and Cafe
Opened by designer Wang Yang, Yaang Life is a beautiful example of one woman's vision and passion for lifestyle creations. Situated in a large converted warehouse next to the Huangpu River, Yaang Life is a design collective which showcases the work of 20 different designers from around the world. The collection is extensive, offering all types of lifestyle goods, including dining tables, sofas, tableware and toys. The prices range from 100 yuan for goods such as tissues and glasses, to up to 40,000 yuan for an intricate, Art Deco screen. Yaang Life reflects the modern-Chinese way of life; it is a visual example of the East-meets-West culture, which continues to be a prominent theme of life in Shanghai. This theme is reflected in the use of bright colors accenting simple designs, Chinese characters used with Art Deco styles and contrasts in angles and edges. Incorporated into the concept is Yaang Cafe, a small area of the shop which is dedicated to coffee and conversation. As the cafe is part of the shop, it features furniture and other items from ranges on sale in the collective, contributing to the Yaang Life vision of an integrated lifestyle. Additionally, a large outdoor seating area overlooks the Huangpu River and provides a relaxing spot to enjoy coffee, tea and chatting with friends.
