Glamor and good-value grub

BEGINNING at Huaihai Road W. and ending on Zhongshan Road W., Xinhua Road has a rich character dotted with European-inspired villas, heritage architecture and abundant plane trees. During the 1930s and 1940s, this street was known for housing a large number of foreign migrants.

Today, the road is rife with a vivid energy when you start the journey at the intersection with Huaihai Road W. A French luxury furniture retailer recently opened its 3,000-square-meter Shanghai flagship store where Xinhua and Huaihai roads meet, showcasing a stunning collection created by renowned designer Jean Paul Gaultier. It is a nice and refreshing experience to explore the new shops and restaurants that line the street and admire the European-influenced architecture as well.

D House

Go west along Xinhua Road to the intersection with Xianghuaqiao Road and turn right, walk about 100 meters and you will find a surprisingly cozy little place called D House. The tiny restaurant and cafe may not suit your concept of an upscale dining place but the overall experience is delightful once you have tasted the food. Its extensive menu offers pizza, pasta, soup, salad, sandwiches, risotto and tapas. It also provides a wide range of drinks including fine Italian coffee, fresh juices, healthy smoothies and beer. The dinner set is great value with the selections ranging from Roman tomato sauce chicken leg (68 yuan), spaghetti with black pepper beef (58 yuan) to customized pizza (78 yuan). Each set includes bread, salad, soup and dessert. The special dinner menu is changed every week, but you can order from the fixed menu and be upgraded to the set meal for an additional 12 yuan. It is a cohesive and well-decorated space with vintage colors and furniture, perfect for a relaxing afternoon tea or romantic dinner. D House offers free delivery within three kilometers with a minimum order of 30 yuan.

Gan Ye Zi Hotpot

Gan Ye Zi presents a new, fun and healthier way of eating hotpot. Unlike those oily, spicy hotpot eateries in the city, Gan Ye Zi is simplistic, yet healthy and allows the true flavors of the food to shine through. The hotpot soup base is made from five kinds of Chinese medicine which is expected to reduce excessive heat in the body. A quick glimpse of the small eatery reveals its strict adherence to vegetarian needs. It offers a "farm to table" buffet of more than 100 kinds of organic vegetables. The fresh vegetables here bring out the best of each season. The 88-yuan buffet hot pot also includes more than ten kinds of vegetarian appetizers offered from the kitchen of Wu Guan Tang Veggie restaurant next door. Another highlight is a Chinese antique medicine cabinet placed at the entrance, where each customer can choose from more than 20 kinds of tea leaves to customize a special cup of tea to accompany their meal. If you are looking for a healthy hotpot at a reasonable price, this is the place to go. Reservation is required since the restaurant is relatively small.

Cotton's

Cotton's is one of Shanghai's most beloved bars and its second outlet on Xinhua Road is a great chilled-out place for an after-work dinner or drink. Like the first Cotton's on Anting Road, it is also set in a wonderfully restored old villa with a fantastic huge garden for the warmer months and two fireplaces for the winter. They consider themselves a bar with good food, from the excellent value 99-yuan steak to spicy fried rice, pad Thai, Mongolian lamb stew and Sichuan beef and rice. The prices may be very competitive but Cotton's is not a "budget" bar. What they are trying to provide is high-class comfortable standards without all the pomp and circumstance. Cotton's is famous for its happy hour with buy-one-get-one-free on all house drinks (40 yuan) so you end up paying only 20 yuan for your glass of imported wine, beer or whiskey. It is a welcoming laid-back spot to come for drinks, atmosphere, food and service - and then be blown away by the prices.

Roche-Bobois Shanghai Flagship Store

On Xinhua Road, you'll find one of the most glamorous home furnishing shops in the city: Roche-Bobois. In this 3,000-square-meter Shanghai flagship store, the French luxury furniture retailer displays its wide choice of furniture with styles ranging from ethnic through to contemporary. Its stunning collection is best described as classic with modern refinements and playful spirit. The company has partnered with many well-known designers and everything in the Roche-Bobois collection is exclusive. The most buzzed-about partnership recently was Jean Paul Gaultier's collaboration with Roche-Bobois, which resulted in a quirky, limited-edition collection featuring bedroom set, sofas, complimentary furniture pieces and accessories - all in typical Gaultier prints, such as nautical stripes and old tattoo motifs. The eye-catching Mah Jong Couture modular sofa, priced at 263,200 yuan (US$39,813), comes with hand-made padded cushions, straight and corner backrests. There is also a folding screen cupboard with four headboard components that fold and unfold like light fabric, offering privacy or extravagance. The hand-trolley has been transformed into a dressing mirror, demonstrating that even the most rudimentary tools can be turned into an object of art.
