Italian bistro Momenti perfect to pasta time

AFTER a year and half in operation, Italian bistro Momenti underwent a facelift at its Xintiandi venue.

The brand’s three partners, Alan Sartori, Yvonne Le and Umberto Rizzetto, took a new approach — an Italian pasta bar where friends and family can savor fresh hand-made pasta and real Italian coffee.

“When we opened the second Momenti on Daxue Road, we followed our dream of creating a gathering place and of uniting people around what they love most: pasta and coffee. Being casual and focusing on simplicity and authenticity has been our success story,” Sartori said.

“We just felt it was a natural step to update our iconic venue in Xintiandi toward the same direction and focusing on these values, which are now core to Momenti.”

Now, the core philosophy is embodied in the credos “good carbs only” and “drink like Italians.” Handmade pasta is not only healthy and essential in everyone’s diet but it is deeply connected with an Italian lifestyle as much as its coffee, a pleasant social habit that is a must in a daily routine, like wine is a must-have with every good meal.

Occupying Xintiandi’s north block corner, the sleek interior remains the same but the original long communal social table is replaced by several smaller-sized ones dedicated to a cozy, intimate vibe. There’s also an outdoor terrace that draws a diverse lunch and dinner crowd throughout the week.

Pasta is the forte here and each type is freshly made in-house following typical Italian traditions.

Several pasta recipes are hard to find in Shanghai, such as the red beetroot orecchiette and basil pesto that was a great delight at dinner. Don’t miss out on whole grain tagliatelle and bolognese ragout. This best-known bolognese recipe was executed superbly and the freshly made tagliatelle took a starring role — properly cooked al dente.

The drink menu offers an impressive list of Italian wines and spirits and a sharp selection of cocktails with playful Italian touches.

Manager Marzio Tomasini uses his knowledge as a sommelier to pick up and recommend real “value for money” bottles, which are already famous and high-quality in Europe but not well known locally. Dining in Momenti gives customers a chance to discover some hidden Italian treasures, all at a reasonable price.
