Keeping the neighborhood feel

WHILE there are many charming streets in the former French concession, Wuyuan Road offers a range of activities that will occupy you for a whole day. We featured the road two years ago but a recent visit discovered several new interesting features: a furniture shop promoting original Chinese design, a welcoming Shanghainese home-cooking restaurant, a small boutique hotel as well as a sophisticated and professional pet shop. Compared to nearby Anfu Road which has been undergoing a more commercial transformation of late, Wuyuan Road retains a genuine vibe of Shanghainese lifestyle. Amid the bustling Changshu Road and Wulumuqi Road, tranquility and serenity prevails on this small street. European-style houses and apartments built in the 1930s are very well maintained. With several hidden-away spots for you to discover, the road offers almost everything for a bourgeoisie life: boutique shopping as well as an eclectic mix of restaurants can be found on this tree-lined street, and there will be choices that satisfy even the most fussy of shoppers or diners.

Ketangjian Boutique Hotel

Rather than pile rooms high in a modern multi-story building, the Ketangjian approach turns individual Western-style villas into unique accommodation spaces. In the case of their Wuyuan Road manifestation, an old lane house has been transformed into a mere two suites, with each occupying around 60 square meters and both offering relaxed comfort and an authentic neighborhood vibe. Surrounded by sophisticated shopping and dining destinations, the hotel perfectly blends a genuine Shanghai living experience with the trendy allure of a modern city. The hotel has typically Art Deco style transporting guests back through the decades to the 1930s. Each of the two guest rooms offers a personal sanctuary of comfort and takes on a slightly different character and layout. The second-floor guest room is priced at 600 yuan (US$91.5) per night while the one on the third floor is 800 yuan. It also features a 50-square-meter rooftop terrace for guests to relax, eat breakfast or socialize with friends. Reservations need to be made seven days in advance.

Moment Art & Décor

This high-end furniture store has several original designs by Chinese local designers. Unique pieces have been produced with a wide range of materials ranging from aluminum to felt. With a 12,000-yuan price tag, aluminum "twist" chairs are only for the big spender. A curvy, colorful wine shelf gives a funky, retro look to any dining room, and a chair upholstered with real fur costs about 3,500 yuan. While prices may not be cheap, bear in mind these are original designs which have been hand crafted by the artists. The shop showcases works by Chinese designers with the intent of breaking the mould of what is considered traditional Chinese design in favor of a more "global contemporary" style. While generally on the more expensive side, there are more affordable furniture pieces and decorative items, such as lamps, vases and clocks available next door, making Moment really more like two shops in one.

Yme Casa

This 1930s-style restaurant offers Shanghainese family food with upscale flair. With colorful stained-glass windows, dark wood furniture and bright fabrics, this rather small restaurant creates a vibe that you are a guest in someone's house. Previously a clothes shop owner, head chef Yu Meiping turned to her true passion of cooking and converted her storefront to the cozy restaurant it is today. With no fixed menu, it's as authentic as they come, as every meal is prepared with fresh seasonal ingredients. The venue seats only up to 22 people, so making reservations at least a day in advance is a must as the chef will make a custom menu for her guests at around 200 yuan per person. The cheaper option, a 38 yuan set lunch, will get you two cold dishes, three hot dishes, one soup, rice and fruit.
