New treats in Tianzifang

TIANZIFANG is ever expanding and evolving and the latest addition is Taikang Terrace (TK Terrace), a maze-like complex of restored factory spaces that's shaping up to be an uber-stylish retail and dining enclave, all brick, steel and wood. Tucked away in Tianzifang area with its entrance on Jianguo Road M., TK Terrace is a mix of indoor and outdoor spaces on different levels, designed by architects at A00. It features art galleries, restaurants, a gelateria, home design shops and a spa. Some tenants have opened their doors, while others are in the renovation process.

This week, we visit a few tenants. Check it out now and discover the scene before all of Shanghai finds out about it.Onezerozero

Onezerozero, a sister retail store of 100percent, offers original and creative objects and events. Opened by Jenny Lam, it will continually provide spaces to collaborate with brands or designers for pop-up show such as Seletti in May/June and now Chocolate Rain through November. On Sunday, there was a Halloween flower arrangement class. "The objective is to make onezerozero an interesting place for customers instead of just a retail store,'' Lam said. The focus is on gift items since more and more tourists are expected in the Tianzifang area. The store carries designer brands including MRKT, innermost, Ibride France, DnD Italy, Yaang and Greenington. Most products are priced at under 500 yuan (US$78.7), but a few cost as much as 25,000 yuan.

Carrying out the boutique theme of many TK Terrace shops, The Gallery is a thimble-sized exhibition space, with fewer than a dozen works on its walls. This is the third Gallery branch in Shanghai, after others recently opened on Moganshan Road and Anfu Road. In contrast to a commercial enterprise, The Gallery describes itself as an art collective, created by a group of people motivated by their love of art. Its founders are Molly Lee, a Malaysian advertising executive and Chinese art lover, and her partner Sai Kit Loke. The galleries aim to nurture young artists and support charities through sales. Fourteen artists' works are displayed across the three galleries at any one time, and the works are rotated every three months. This branch now features work by Yu Qiping, whose paintings depict grotesque visions of typical Chinese workers in daily life, and Peng Peng, who paints flirty cartoon-style interpretations of pin-up girls.

Anyone living in Shanghai notices the effects of stress, pollution and the extreme weather on their skin. Boutique spa The Sanctuary promises to address clients' skin complaints on a personalized basis. Before a facial, clients are asked about their diet and lifestyle and then treatment is customized based on specific needs. Until a year ago The Sanctuary was an abandoned 1930s warehouse, but renovations have created a relaxing 130-square-meter space with eight treatment rooms. Co-owner Lisa Yang studied medicine at Yale University and has commissioned a range of organic products for the spa, which can also be purchased in store. The Sanctuary aims to offer relaxation and the staff considers it a success if clients fall asleep during treatment. A basic, 75-minute facial treatment costs 380 yuan. A 150-minute "Age defense" facial to pamper and tighten the skin costs 2,200 yuan. Massage, aromatherapy and body skin scrubs are available.
