Plenty of sparkle in Shanghai's diamond
IF a diamond completes a ring, the combination of the Bund and the Huangpu River is the jewel of Shanghai. Set in the center of the city, the prestigious waterfront reflects the prosperity of modern Shanghai, its historic buildings from the colonial era today housing fine restaurants and luxury retailers. While there are plenty of impressive options, we focused on two - Three on the Bund and Bund 22. Both buildings have been revamped, giving their historical heritages a fresh look. Three on the Bund's facelift has created a lavish yet welcoming appearance, with bars and restaurants such as Unico meeting diverse tastes. Bund 22 reopened toward the end of last year, freshened up but preserving its elegance. They seek to provide a "premium tailored service" for guests, with luxury brands offering personalized services in everything from gastronomy to wedding dresses.
Shanghai Art Center On Bund 22
Having built an aesthetic space to allow the flow of creativity, the committed team of the Shanghai Art Center is now ready to fulfill its vision of using art to enhance the city's quality and attitude. This focuses on the study of both Chinese and foreign works - from traditional to contemporary. The center has an impressive database of contacts; including artists, other professionals involved in art and academics. Groups meet to delve deeper into a chosen topic, deciphering messages behind the language of art and exploring modern trends. Catering for collectors with differing interests, the gallery carries high-end art pieces generally priced at several million yuan. Visitors to the exhibitions can't help but be immersed in the world of art.

El Willy
After four years in the former French concession area, the opportunity arose for the popular Spanish chef Willy Trullas Moreno to occupy space in the historical 1906 building on the Bund. The chef says he always loved the Bund and had long dreamt of having a restaurant there. So he moved his el Willy restaurant to the prime location last year. The chef insists in quality ingredients and consistent quality, and focuses in Spanish traditional, contemporary tapas with a fun twist. The structure of the menu follows the Chinese yin-yang structure of a meal. All the food is designed to be shared family-style and to be eaten with chopsticks. Signature dishes include sauteed shrimps with garlic and chilli for 80 yuan (US$12.9); scallop ceviche, avocado and crispy shallots (82 yuan); baby burrata cheese, tomato in textures, basil, pinenuts and arugula (138 yuan); and Willy's mixed seafood dry paella (388 yuan). The previous el Willy on Donghu Road has been turned into a new restaurant.

Unico
Unico is one of the most talked-about lounge bars in town, thanks in part to its prime location inside the landmark Three on the Bund and an unbeatable vibe that is seductive and eccentric. Unico markets itself as a Latin soul lounge - the first concept of its kind in Shanghai. It offers a full sensory experience through music, gastronomy, cocktails, fashion and art. The space is centered around a stunning bar, helmed by expert mixologist Hector Monroy. The food menu is created by two Michelin star chef Mauro Colagreco, who promotes Latin-inspired creative tapas. These range from 28 yuan (US$4.5) to 128 yuan. Signature dishes include empanadas with spicy sauce; seaweed focaccia topped with smoked avocado and vegetable ceviche; and beef sashimi.
