Religion, retail and relaxation

XINTIANDI is best-known for its range of high-end shopping stores, restaurants, coffee shops and expensive apartment blocks. The restored shikumen houses add a great vibe to the area making shopping and eating out even more pleasant. However, a short walk from the Xintiandi complex, you will stumble upon Danshui Road, comprised of a mixture of British-style terraced abodes with small local Chinese convenience stores, boutique shops and coffee houses. Danshui Road is truly a great place to have a stroll on a cool Sunday afternoon and on your way you will find a traditional Chinese homeware and furniture store, a tiny, homey coffee shop and a blend of architectural styles.

I WAS homeware

IWAS (Everybody, water, air, sunshine) is a small store on Danshui Road selling traditional Chinese handmade designs. Everything from coasters to jade stone and large good luck charms made from South American shells can be found here. The decorations might be quite pricey but worth it if you want good luck on your side. The most expensive object is a 198,000 yuan (US$30,063) brass Chinese Buddha, the only one of its kind in Shanghai. For tighter budgets, one can find small good luck charms and handmade jewelry at affordable prices. The former are priced at 300 yuan and the latter, such as earrings, are priced at 120 yuan. The store used to sell products from Southeast Asia, but a focus on traditional Chinese designs was more desirable so now the designers come from Taiwan and Beijing. Everything is manufactured in Taiwan.

All Saints Church

At the corner of Danshui Road and Fuxing Road M., stands the impressive 17th-century-style building of the All Saints Methodist Church. A missionary from the American Saints Association supervised the construction of this church, which was eventually completed in 1925. There are 63 steps that lead up to the bell tower and this red brick place of worship can seat 500 people at a time. All Saints Church was first built near Huangpi Road and Huaihai Road, but as the congregation grew larger the church was rebuilt on Danshui Road to accommodate more people. There is a service every Sunday from 7am to 9:30am. A two-story office building in the church, along with other buildings around the church compound, have been removed to make room for a commercial project. Church officials said the main hall of the church, which is on the protection list, will be maintained.

CPWDP site

The beautiful garden villa on Danshui Road is the former site of the first cadre meeting of the Chinese Peasants' and Workers' Democratic Party which took place on August 9, 1930. The villa welcomes you with an impressive garden and stone footpath that leads to the front door where you can find the statue of Deng Yanda (1895-1931), founder of the Chinese Nationalist Party (renamed Chinese Peasants' and Workers' Democratic Party in 1947.) Deng was an important commander in the Northern Expedition (1926-1928) which the Nationalists launched to unify China. When Chiang Kai-shek broke with the Chinese Communist Party and Russia, Deng denounced Chiang and left China for Russia and Europe. On his return to China, Deng attempted to form a new party. The party's original members were left-wing Nationalists and expelled Communists. Deng was secretly executed by Chiang Kai-shek in 1931.
