The lesser-known locale

WITH the weather warming up, Ferguson Lane on Wukang Road (which we featured last Sunday) is becoming a hot spot in more ways than one, but the nearby Tai'an Road area is somehow overshadowed. Only a short walk from the intersection of Wukang and Tai'an roads, continue for one block on Tai'an Road, turn left on to Xingguo Road and walk straight to the end that borders Huaihai Road M. This "off-the-beaten-track" section is worth visiting for people who are in search of high quality vintage pieces, art deco and Chinese-inspired modern furniture, designer fashion items, and decent French food in an old European villa. A cup of coffee and a rum baba in the garden of Mardi Gras can provide the perfect end to a leisurely Sunday stroll around the area.

Mu Gallery

With the majority of its clientele expats, Mu Gallery provides former French concession residents with a mix of home furnishing ranging from traditional antique Chinese pieces to modern European-influenced furniture. Many of the items have a distressed vintage look with a modern design and you can trust that all furniture brought in from all corners of China are of good quality, including the older, rarer cabinets from inner Mongolia which are a customer favorite.

Some of the smaller, simpler items such as a water bucket will cost you 200 yuan (US$30.72) while new cabinets can go up to around 4,000 yuan or more for a vintage piece. You can choose from different templates of furniture to adapt the style and color to your preference and even more particular customers are welcome to drop by the warehouse located in Minhang District.

Meuh!

If bright colors, vivacious prints and quirky detail are your thing, this vintage-inspired boutique with an affordable collection of women and men's wear, jewelry and accessories designed by Helene Meunier is worth a visit. The shop's name comes from the owner's nickname "Meumeu," which sounds like the noise a cow makes and she used to hate - but eventually came to use for her brand because she felt it made a statement. Self taught in fashion, Meunier grew up in a family of decorators and interior designers. Prices start from 120 yuan for accessories and go up to 3,200 yuan for an evening dress. For a red-carpet gown or wedding dress, expect to pay from 6,500 to 10,000 yuan.

Where What Who

This local boutique was established by fashion designers Bono Zhang and Danni Tang two years ago. Soon after their first store opened, the local fashion house was invited to participate in Shanghai Fashion Week in 2010 and was regarded as a "dark horse" by the media. The cuts play a key role in defining the brand's style with black, white and grey as main colors. Their "Mad Mars" spring/summer collection, inspired by outer space, features futuristic looks and geometrical shapes. Prices range from 500 to 2,000 yuan.

Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras lives up to its name as French bistro on the first floor by day and sophisticated art deco bar/lounge on the second floor by night. Open since August 2009, it offers lunch sets starting at 80 yuan up to 130 yuan including coffee or tea and any of the delicious assortment of tarts on hand. Dinner is a bit pricier, however, the quality of the food and portion sizes are well worth the price tag. You can also drop in for some afternoon treats and get a generous helping of a variety of desserts and excellent coffee for 80 yuan between 3-5pm everyday. If French cuisine isn't your favorite, check out its sushi bar next door. The Japanese eatery imports their products from Dalian, Liaoning Province and even North Korea. After dinner, head upstairs to the bar lounge. With a classy rustic edge, the M bar specializes in single malt whiskey and cocktails will cost you from 60 to 80 yuan.
