Tree-lined road that's beginning to bloom

Wuyuan road is an increasingly popular area of the former French concession area. In recent months, more fashion boutiques, restaurants and quirky design shops have opened down this somewhat secluded, tree-lined street. The old Chinese lane house buildings offer beautiful locations for businesses and provide an interesting and unique shopping experience.

Vertet +

Vertet + is a small but character-fillled florist with a special twist - it offers Japanese-style flower design workshops. The owner studied flower design at Mami flower design school in Tokyo and was inspired to bring its theories of flower arrangement and composition to the Pearl of the Orient. Each one-to-one class costs 290 yuan (US$46), and is taught in Chinese and Japanese. Bouquets are made to preference and budget, and there are many designs from which to choose, with extensive information on the different uses of each flower and plant. Prices vary depending on size and season, with bouquets generally priced between 100 and 500 yuan. Vertet + also offers gift boxes with a combination of flowers and champagne, which can be tailored to suit an occasion, said management. One of the biggest highlights of Vertet + is its impressive array of small plants and cacti, which follow a Japanese style. Prices range from 30 to 200 yuan - which seem very reasonable, as the quality of produce is high. These quirky plants will add a unique element to any home design scheme.

Senator Saloon

Senator Saloon is a new craft cocktail bar on Wuyuan Road, amidst the fashion and lifestyle boutiques lining the street, from the people behind Citizen Cafe and Sichuan Citizen. It's a Prohibition-era speakeasy themed bar, with an emphasis on design from the period. Prohibition - which from 1920 until 1933 banned the manufacture, sale and transportation of liquor in the United States - ironically heralded the beginning of a new era of glamor and innovation in cocktails, as drinking establishments went underground. Senator Saloon features a dimly lit darkwood interior, a Texas-style tin ceiling, flock wallpaper from southern California and exposed brick walls. The menu features prohibition-era cocktails, with classics including Sazerac for 72 yuan (US$11.2), Old Fashioned (68 yuan) and Aviation (68 yuan). Oak barrel-aged cocktails will soon also be introduced. The bar also provides an extensive list of American bourbons and whiskeys. To accompany craft cocktails, bar food is available, such as grilled edamame soy beans - very tasty, shrimp cocktail, sandwiches and desserts, all at prices ranging from 26 to 78 yuan.

Xinlelu.com showroom

At the back of a beautiful courtyard is one of the area's most inspiring fashion collaborations. William the Beekeeper - the original store opened on Fenyang Road more than a year ago - has opened a second shop in a space-sharing endeavor with new fashion enterprise Xinlelu.com. The space, which is simple and modern in design, is split into two: one section displaying vintage-style designs by William the Beekeeper's primary designer Kaileeni; the other acting as a showroom for online fashion boutique Xinlelu.com. The two boutiques work seamlessly together, offering a wide variety of high-quality designer clothing and accessories which are similar in style. There is a quirky undertone to the concept, highlighted by the use of flowing, feminine fabrics, unusual, handcrafted jewelry and interesting designs. Additionally, the collaboration hosts monthly events in the courtyard; these include flea markets and design bazaars. Xinlelu.com, an independent design collective that launched in April, uses the space on Wuyuan Road as a showroom to display a small selection of its collection. The clothes are mostly manufactured in China, though with several collections imported. Xinlelu.com currently includes more than 20 different designers, including Bubble Mood and Aijek. The showroom allows customers to gain a more tangible idea of the pieces on offer and displays an array of different fabrics, colors and designs. Prices range from 300 yuan (US$47.6) to more than 2,000 yuan, with the aim of providing women with that special, statement piece.

Spicy Moment

Adding to the variety of dining options that have recently sprung up in the Wuyuan Road area, Spicy Moment brings a taste of Hunan to Shanghai. Simple in concept and design, the restaurant offers authentic Hunan cuisine in a stylish ambience. It is set in a beautiful space which utilizes spot lighting and a Japanese-style design. The interior is modern, complete with avant-garde paintings. The place does not immediately strike as being a particularly authentic Hunan eatery, but first impressions can be wrong. Each dish is reasonably priced and the quality of produce is to a high standard. Dishes range in price from 15 to 40 yuan (US$2.4 to 6.3) and portions are relatively large. The small conservatory at the front of the restaurant provides an attractive ambience for candlelit dinners or the perfect spot to check out the increasingly varied activity on Wuyuan Road. Featuring a relatively small menu, Spicy Moment focuses on traditional Hunan options, such as bull frog hot pot and sugared sweet potato fries. All of the meals on offer reflect the Hunan passion for spice and intense flavors. These dishes are definitely for those with a penchant for spice.
