Where to get a taste of the grape

AS more people enjoy drink wine in Shanghai, many wine boutique shops have opened in the past few years - good news for connoisseurs and novices alike.

Many shops offer free tastings in pleasant settings where staff are happy to explain various wines and how to pair them with particular foods. Aromas of vanilla, cherries, fruits, pepper and tobacco can be discovered.

Stopping by a wine shop beats picking up a bottle in a crowded supermarket. Most wine boutiques have a personal, unpretentious touch and offer a range of types and wines to suit all budgets. Relaxing with a little wine, learning about the pleasures of the grape and nibbling a little cheese in a cozy setting is a delightful way to spend some time.

Here are our picks of the week.Just Grapes - wines to suit you

A fresh idea has been brought to retail wine shop and lounge Just Grapes: a sticker on each bottle indicating the wine's flavor such as "fruity, spicy, rich, smooth" to ease the customers' selection process and help them find the wine best suited to their own tastes. The shop is also keen to discover new wineries and new products, especially in less popular regions such as Greece, Romania and Georgia. The second floor has a cozy environment, ideal for casual lunch or dinner with a great selection of appetizers, pastas, pizzas and sandwiches. And a wine adviser is on hand to help choose the perfect wine to pair with the meal.
