English designer doesn’t worry about following rules
Who is he?
Born in London, Paul Cocksedge escaped to take industrial design at Sheffield Hallam University in South Yorkshire in England. He got his master’s in product design at the Royal College of Art. He joined with Joana Pinho to open Paul Cocksedge Studio, known for in-house design of concepts, installations and interior objects. Cocksedge lectures and has exhibited around the world. He is the face of the studio and in charge of its creative direction.
Tell us some of your works and name the one you are most proud of.
I am proud of them all, for different reasons. For example, the Kiss project (electronic mistletoe that generates charitable donations) is a series of fantastic functions. I am also proud of the show I just did in New York with a gallery. In that project, I am proud of my table and my seating because they are made from limited fragmental pieces. I am proud of the Vamp (a gadget that plays music wirelessly through vintage speakers) and my electronic work as well. I’m excited about the future in terms of buildings, architecture and spaces.
Apart from Kiss Shanghai, are you currently involved with any project?
We are working on a very big staircase for a building in London. It’s a creative project like a garden in the air. It is a normal staircase, and this idea is to make the staircase bigger and more functional. If you want to do this, you need more space. But we can make use of the free space of the staircase itself. You can sit in the room here to have fresh air and have a cup of tea, here to meet people or have meetings and here you can use it as a library or you can draw here. I also put many plants across the staircase and make it more like a garden. When you walk around, you can enjoy the beautiful view here as well.
Describe your design style.
I don’t have a specific definition of my design style. I think I can try any good ideas, jumping from big ones to small ones.
You have worked on many projects in different areas. Where are you most creative?
Every city has its own way. For example, Shanghai is an ambitious and creative city in my point of view. This is my second time in Shanghai. I also went to Beijing and Taipei before. I like Taipei and it’s a great city.
What does your home mean to you?
It is the same as everyone. Family is more important than anything. Maybe families can give us more inspiration about design, just like the design of Kiss Shanghai. It’s very warm and it talks about love and celebration.
What kind of things do you enjoy collecting?
I like collecting photos and I have spent lots of time collecting photos and doing photography.
Where would you like to go most in Shanghai?
I had a tour in Xintiandi and it’s a kind of creation and history.
What will be the next big design trend?
I think the next big design trend is “no trend.” Designers and artists will not follow any trend and will have their own ideas. For me, I don’t have any kind of rules or trends to follow. It should be a kind of freedom. Following trends is slowly breaking down. I think it’s good to find your own way.
