Latest trends look back for inspiration
WHAT'S going to be the next big thing in home furnishings?
Well, the Maison & Objet show in Paris earlier this year gave an indication of what looks likely to be hot.
Several trends emerged.
Energy and growth were reflected in many exhibitors' work, pushing the boundaries of raw materials and combining cutting-edge technology with traditional handicrafts to create something refreshingly new.
And bravo to lighting brands! Innovation was evident everywhere: whether exploring the possibilities of solar energy; natural phosphorescent materials; and recent advances in Organic Light Emitting Diode - OLED - technology to create dramatic and futuristic illuminations.
While perennially popular in many design circles, there was a particular focus on retro and vintage - whether in furniture, lighting or accessories.
From the "grand siècle" of 17th century French art and literature, including the classical period of Louis XIV, to 1930s and beyond, vintage influences could be seen in many modern items.
Especially at this time of economic crisis in much of Europe, such elements create a nostalgic atmosphere, awakening feelings and memories and attempt to recall a seemingly more glorious past.
Most showrooms mixed modern products with a few vintage-inspired pieces.
And perhaps in a reaction to austerity in much of Europe, opulence was often highlighted: through everything from Louis XVI couches in velvet pastel tone to chandeliers for your home, with touches of gold throughout to make you feel like royalty.
Comfort, elegance with a touch of past is the leitmotiv of 2013.
And nostalgia aside, I can confidently say that antiques are hot!
