Ge gen
EDITOR'S Note: In this biweekly column, we introduce a medicinal ingredient used in traditional Chinese medicine, along with prescription and usage instructions. By providing basic knowledge of TCM, we aim to acquaint readers with China's profound heritage of traditional and natural healing.
Ge gen (Pueraria root) is not a rare herb in China. In some regions of south China, it is widely used as an ingredient for soup. It has been proved quite helpful in relieving certain ailments and benefiting health.
It was widely prescribed for relieving fever and diarrhea in earlier times, and is today recommended as a health-benefiting food to delay aging.
Ge gen which means the root of the ge family, gets it's name from the son of an official who escaped the death sentence imposed on his entire family and made a living by digging for the herb and then offering it to treat people.
Apart from starch as the main ingredient, ge gen is also found rich in flavanoids including puerarin and daidzein, as well as proteins and other microelements.
Ge gen is described as a mildly "cold" herb that helps dispel pathogenic heat and toxins, as well as promote body fluid. It is recommended for relieving fever, diarrhea and cardiovascular problems such as high blood pressure, high blood sugar and high blood fat.
Modern research found it effective in improving immunity, adjusting organ functions and anti-aging. The pueraria isoflavone can help prevent cancer and promote female hormones, which is especially recommended for women during menopause.
