Sang ji sheng

RANDOMLY picking anything within reach as medicine is of course against the medical principle of treating a disease with the appropriate medicine. But accidents sometimes happened in TCM, leading to a better outcome and discovery of a new herb. So is the case with the finding of sang ji sheng (Chinese taxillus twig) - a parasite plant often used for rheumatism.

A rich man's son suffered rheumatism that kept him from moving on cold, damp days. He was treated with little effect by a famous doctor far away. A laborer was sent to get medicine for him.

The laborer was once stopped by a winter storm and took some thin branches binding an old mulberry bush and said it was medicine from the doctor.

Surprisingly, the rich man's son was cured. The doctor asked the laborer what really happened and eventually found the branches. He found the decoction worked on other patients with rheumatism.

TCM later classified it as a "neutral" herb that helps reinforce liver and kidney, strengthen tendons and bones, dispel pathogenic wind and dampness inside and nourish blood. It is often prescribed to relieve rheumatism, sore joints, lower back and knee pain and bleeding in pregnancy. It is also used to reduce blood pressure.
