She chuang zi

THE small non-attractive, umbrella-shaped white flower quite common today in damp fields and by the sides of streams was once a precious herb that you had to risk your life to obtain.

According to the legend, after a whole village was inflicted by a disease causing itchiness, a doctor suggested that taking a bath with a soup made from the seed of the herb could help cure the disease. But the herb had to be obtained from a bed of snakes (she chuang literally means snake bed). When the villagers got the herb and took the bath they were all cured.

She chuang zi is a warm herb that helps warm the kidney, reinforce yang ("hot") energy, dispel pathogenic dampness and kill "worms" (epiphytes or parasites). It is usually prescribed for problems such as tinea, eczema, damp and itchiness of private parts.

"Ben Cao Gang Mu" ("The Compendium of Materia Medica") also recorded it as a herb that can help warm men's yang energy while reinforce women's yin ("cold") energy, which helps relieve sexual impotence and sterility problems.

External application is more recommended for skin irritation problems, while taking it orally is more suitable for sterility problems.
