TCM Treasures - Mint 薄荷
MULTIFACETED mint (bo he) has been known in healing since ancient times and considered a yin (cold energy) herb that dispels inner heat, removes toxins and relieves sore throats and colds.
There are numerous other uses for mint, both the leaves of many varieties and the extracted essential oil. Mint has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties and is used to treat inflammation and pain.
According to traditional Chinese medicine, the herb's essence travels to the lungs and liver and promotes the circulation of qi or energy, improving liver function.
Mint is commonly used to soothe or treat symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, indigestion, irritable bowel and bloating. It is also used in aroma therapy. The aroma of mint has been found to sharpen and refresh the mind. Mint juice is sometimes applied to aching joints. Ancient Chinese applied fresh mint leaves on insect bites.
Mint leaves can be used to repel mosquitoes and mint oil is an environmentally friendly insecticide for common pests such as ants and roaches.Mint congee
Boil 30g fresh mint or 15g dried mint in 1 liter, till half water evaporates. Cool. Remove mint.
Make congee with 150g rice. When half done, add mint and rock sugar.
Benefits: Improves appetite, dispels inner heat.
Mint tofu soup
Stew tofu, 50g fresh mint and green onions, till soup reduces by half.
Benefits: Relieves common cold, sneezing, running rose.
Mint tea
Boil mint leaves with water. Drink daily.
Benefits: Acts as diuretic, dispels inner heat.
