Yellowweed

Simplified Chinese: 千里光 Pinyin: qiān lǐ guāng

Qian li guang (yellowweed), literally thousand-mile light, is a herb that in legend enables people to see things a thousand miles away. Though not so magic, yellowweed is still a useful TCM herb that helps improve eyesight and relieves various acute inflammation problems.

The name of qian li guang came from a legend of two girls born with weak eyesight. The parents tried hundreds of way to improve their sight in vain. A 100-year-old man told them that the yellow flowers growing nearby might help the girls.

They boiled the yellow flowers in water and the herbal steam nourished the girls’ eyes as part of the treatment with the old man’s guidance. The girls’ sight quickly improved and it was said they were able to see things a thousand miles away.

Therefore, the yellow flower that granted them better sight is called qian li guang or thousand-mile light.
