'Ancient' star calculator watch
THE mysterious Antikythera mechanism, an ancient Greek calculator of astronomical positions, has been turned into the world's most exotic timepiece.
It is the first time the Antikythera mechanism, dating from before 100 BC, has been reproduced in precision working miniature. Recovered in 1901 from a Greek shipwreck off the island of Antikythera, it is one of the most mysterious artifacts of civilization and is not completely understood.
The Hublot Antikythera Calibre 2033-CH01 will be presented at the Baselworld watch show in spring 2012. Mathias Buttet, director of manufacturing and R&D at Hublot unveiled the news at the Belles Montres International Luxury Watch Salon in Shanghai last week. It is the renowned watch salon's debut in Shanghai.
Buttet described his modern micro-mechanical tribute to the Antikythera mechanism, known as the world's first calculator.
The mechanism fits on the wrist. It features a tourbillon and the dial shows an Egyptian calendar, a calendar for the Panhellenic games, an aperture showing the moon, lunar phases, the sun, zodiac and various Greek astronomical cycles. Only four will be produced. One will be auctioned for charity. The others will be exhibited in museums.
