Coppola helps expand brand

Passion, energy and curiosity are distinctive traits of the versatile Italian designer Riccardo Coppola. Though he has a degree in architecture, he had been developing his love for craftsmanship and fabrics since the age of 15.

“Fashion, in my opinion, is a combination of style, material and atmosphere,” said Coppola. For him, forms and details combined with function and look are vital in designing clothes.

As the creative director of Peuterey Group, owner of the brands Peuterey, Aiguille Noire, Geospirit and Postcard, he labeled the collection for the brand as smart and free, with clean forms and feels utter comfort.

Peuterey, a made-in-Italy luxury fashion brand founded in 2002, is showing no sign of slowing down toward global expansion. It recently unveiled its flagship store in Shanghai. The new store adapts the original concept of the European stores to Chinese rules of feng shui.

Peuterey is the name of a peak along Mont Blanc, a fascinating route in the Alps. The link with discovery and traveling explains the brand’s soul, a practical and versatile “timeless casualwear” concept with a modern take.

Shanghai Daily talked to Coppola about the philosophy and creativity.

Q: What brought you into the world of fashion?

A: I’ve always been interested in craftsmanship and hand skills, conveyed both through my activity as an old furniture restorer in my youth and through my love for vintage in all respects, which I developed since the age of 15 at an old-fashioned apparel store. I often visited Florence for study purposes back in the 1980s, but a friend of mine brought me into a fashion company for men. From that moment, I fell in love with this work and developed a high interest in fabrics, forms and details combined with function and look. It is not by chance the continuous reference to the retail world ... in my vision to encourage what I refer to as an actual “pursuit of impeccable balance between the garment and its window display.”

Q: What’s your approach to design?

A: The combination of materials, details and cuttings. I often say jackets are more or less our personal houses when we go around and the pockets and details inside are sorts of “rooms.” When we started with Peuterey, we worked a lot with the concept of fitting, which is the ultimate element that changes everything.

Q: What’s your design style?

A: My design style is smart and free, and the Peuterey collection combines clean forms, light materials and utter comfort in a set of versatile and refined garments.

Q: What inspires you to present a new “story” for each collection?

A: Cities are a source of inspiration for us, starting from architecture, elements, colors, local lifestyle, to new art movements. For next season, we refer to the north of England, which has a combination of very strong local tradition and contemporary architecture.

Q: What do you want to offer people who wear your designs?

A: Our kind of fashion is to be contemporary, comfortable, elegant but not so much show-off. Our pieces are multi-functional, chic and can be worn in different situations.
