Dressing boyish to show femininity
SPORTING a boyish look doesn’t mean that you are not feminine or sexy. On the contrary, dressing up in a relaxed-fit, boyfriend-cut style serves as a playful alternative to your typical style to show femininity.
The origin of boyfriend fashion is literally borrowing and wearing a boyfriend’s clothes — distressed jeans, band tees, blazers, cardigan... The key way to wear the look is to make it oversized and roll up the sleeves.
However, a boyish element with feminine touches is the key for this look. The baggy look was a fad of the 1990s but today’s trendy women are opting for a relaxed fit. The pieces are relaxed in shape with layering away from the body such as oversized tees, hoodies, chunky knits, oversized coats or bomber jackets. The loose-fitting top or military-style jacket can be paired with skinny jeans or a roomier, slouchier “boyfriend” cut jeans to achieve a boyish look and add a sporty edge. During the summer months, match with a skirt or shorts with fun-filled color and a pair of brogues, the female equivalent of male-dominated shoe designs, to make a sweet and innocent look.
One key front in the “boyfriend” phenomenon has been shoes. Women’s brogues are the key boyfriend shoe style, and now there is a wider selection in the market for cool looks including desert boots, loafers and correspondent shoes. The man-woman fashion boundaries are once again broken.
The young British designer JW Anderson is defining himself around the notion of a “shared wardrobe,” which he describes as “when garments don’t really have a sex.”
Like it or not, the masculine-inspired clothing at least is comfortable and practical for daily wear and can be found in virtually every store on any budget.
