Farah Khan builds ‘cool’ fashion empire

FARAH Khan’s renown as a fashion mogul stretches far beyond her base in Malaysia.

The socialite and president of Melium Group presides over a global luxury retail group that distributes more than 100 premier brands.

In 2007, she started her namesake label with a stated intention to “dress the coolest girls on the planet.”

“We found there was no particular brand specializing in evening wear and party dresses that were both glamorous, fun and affordable,” she said. “That was the main reason we started the new line.”

The Farah Khan main line is distinguished by vibrant styles, elegant silhouettes and intricate embellishments. Her pieces epitomize fuss-free dressing, while retaining the fun and individualism of dressing up.

“We produce ready-to-wear pieces that can be rolled up and packed in a suitcase,” Khan said. “When you arrive at your destination, you unroll the clothing, give it a shake and it’s ready to wear.”

Retail prices range from US$800 to US$1,000.

Her fashion house’s signature embellishments are all hand-sewn, bead by bead, by Southeast Asian artisans employing techniques handed down over the centuries.

“We have about 300 artisans working for us,” she said. “Over time, the brand has gained a lot of respect due to its authenticity with Southeast Asian heritage.”

Farah Khan’s designs are inspired by her travels, the people she meets and a wide array of other subjects, such as architecture, botany, art and music.

Her love of travel also inspires her clothing created for women on the go, combining glamor and practicality.

“The Farah Khan woman is modern, versatile, and always on the move,” she said. “My brand reflects my lifestyle.”

Her niche brand targets “cool” younger generations.

“We have kept it small and precise,” she said. “Our products are recognizable. The Farah Khan girl is very similar in any city, whether she is Chinese or American.”

Khan considers herself more of a creator than a designer, though the distinction may be hard to explain.

“Our silhouettes are body-conscious, and the clothes are meant to make women look beautiful and feel confident,” she said. “It’s all about wearability. Our pieces let you create your own look.”

Farah Khan’s clothing is sold in 70 cities worldwide and has been worn by celebrities such as Sarah Hyland, Paris Hilton, Serinda Swan, Nina Dobrev, Selena Gomez, Giuliana Rancic and Li Bingbing.

“I would like my brand to sell in multi-brand stores in China to popularize our brand name here,” Khan said.

“Fashion is a global phenomenon for every woman, and Asian women love quality and style.” She added. “Fashion today is not just from the West. I want to explore Asian talent and expose Asian designs to the global market.”

Away from the boardroom, Khan devotes much of her time to charity work, with a special emphasis on children with special needs.
