Fashion Week struts its stuff

Xintiandi Taiping Lake Park was thronged last week for the biannual Shanghai Fashion Week. From day to night, fashionistas and fashion editors dressed up in cutting-edge outfits awaiting designers from home and abroad showcasing their collections for spring/summer 2014.

From October 17 to 23, 41 runway shows were presented, including the established brands Vera Wang, Qiu Hao, Helen Lee, Ji Cheng, and Decoster, and emerging designer brands such as Underoath, ZiX-G, Rico Lee, and Moodbox.

In addition to homegrown fashion brands, audience savored dynamic design works from abroad.

Highlights included graduate shows from the Swedish School of Textiles, IFA Paris, and the Raffles Design Institute Shanghai. Qiu Hao’s runway show during the Shanghai Fashion Week has always won him a rave review among fashion editors, critics and fashionistas. This time, his new collection for spring/summer 2014 continues to carry on Qiu’s extreme simplistic design: presenting three-dimensional forms of the body with two-dimensional shapes. Neat silhouettes strike a harmony with the body shape that emphasizes the curves of the waistline. The design is minimalist but emphasizes the femininity traits.  White is given more weight on the usual black-and-white base tone. Materials like heavy silk, lambskin, knitted wears and handmade sheepskin plaiting materials are used in the collection while numerous hand-folded thin leather straps have been woven into the surface of goatskin to form delicate lines, resembling the basketry of traditional bamboo ware.
