Focus on HK creativity
THE Hong Kong Design Center (HKDC) has launched a three-month exhibition, "A Better Tomorrow," in Shanghai to introduce the development of creative industries in the island city.
It is also one of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's official programs during the Expo. Shanghai is trying to develop its creative industries, so the exhibition is also a platform to exchange ideas.
On display are the representative works of 50 emerging Hong Kong designers from fields including graphic and illustrative design, product and space design, fashion and accessories design and new media. The exhibition is divided into three phases, each running for about a month.
"Through the event we'd like to showcase the vibrant creativity of the new-generation designers in Hong Kong," says Freeman Lau, vice chairman and board of directors at HKDC. "We also want to provide a platform for young designers from both Hong Kong and Shanghai. Hopefully there will be more collaborations among young designers from the two cities."
The ongoing exhibition is focused on the new media and illustrative design. Some highlighted pieces are popular Hong Kong illustrator Carrie Chau's collaborative works between her own brand Wun Ying collection and various famous brands such as Nokia, Fendi and Nike; Dorophy Tang's cross-cultural designs featuring Chinese blue-and-white porcelain; Toby Yeung's creative toy designs; an antique loom that has been renovated by Kingsley Ng into a modern music machine equipped with computer audio system.
The next themed exhibition, starting on August 18, will feature designs in the product and space design industries.
