High and low hunt for heels and flats

WHEN I'm low, clothes can't make me happy; food only makes me fat; but shoes, oh shoes, they are always my ultimate comfort."

Ying Yuan owns more than 200 pairs of shoes. But that's still far from enough for the young Shanghainese lady. I ask the "shoe fetishist" as she describes herself, how many is too many?

"I don't know, but every time I step into a shoe store, I always feel the calling of shoes as if they were saying: 'buy me, buy me'," she said, laughing.

"Sometimes I even buy shoes not my size -- I don't really have to wear them, as long as I see them, I'm happy!" Living in a normal size, two-bedroom apartment, Ying has a big closet filled with shoes. She changes the "display items" according to seasons. "Each pair of shoes has a story," she said. "I often buy shoes when I travel. They make those trips even more memorable."

If Ying is really keen on a certain model, she collects different colors of it. Once she bought a pair of dramatic high heels in pink and wore them to a party.

"Everybody loves them and asked where I bought them," she recalled. "The next day, I felt the urge to rush to the store and buy all the other colors of them."

She also loves to buy shoes for her girlfriends: "Sometimes when I see a pair of shoes, I know they are not my style but they seem to be created for a certain friend of mine, I will definitely take them -- I love the idea of sharing good things and happiness with my friends."

The 23-year-old doesn't always shop at luxury shoe stores. Most of the time she goes to local boutiques along Julu Road or Xinle Road where she always finds "lots of surprises."

Ying also frequents luxury brand outlets when she travels overseas. But her favorite remains a pair of lace Christian Louboutin which she bought in Shanghai.

"I fell in love with the pair at first sight," she said.

"When I wear them, I feel as if they were custom-made for me, so comfortable although the heels are so high.

"This is the essence of a pair of good shoes -- they might look 'painful,' but they are not."

Ying is excited about the upcoming collaboration between H&M and Jimmy Choo which will hit the market in November. "Jimmy Choo is one of my favorite shoe brands but its shoes are so expensive," she said.

"I have no idea what the collection will look like but, if possible, I'd like to buy every pair of them. Just imagine Jimmy Choo at H&M prices!"

Her recommendations for next season's "must-have" shoes include thigh boots (the higher the better), ankle boots with rivets, animal prints or faux fur, as well as classic, black patent, peep toe 3-inch (7.6 centimeters) high heels.
