How to really shine this spring

SHINY and glossy garments were a dazzling feature on spring/summer runways, not only in metallic tones but covering the whole spectrum - perfect for the bright colors of the months ahead.

Burberry Prorsum made "shine on" the essence of its collection: printed metallic foil corseted dresses; a mini orange cape gracing the upper arms; a doctor's bag … in vivid, iridescent peacock shades and a full-on explosion of bold jewel hues.

The classic trench was ramped-up again this season, in vibrant looks that included ruched pink, ombred fuchsia to coppery lace and feathers. Burberry's chief creative officer Christopher Bailey described the collection as "a little bit sassier, a little bit sexier and a little bit more joyful."

We are drawn to things that stimulate through vivid color and contrasts, and the use of metallic fabrics by designers this season is testament to the fact that fashionistas cannot resist their playful charm. A metallic piece - no matter whether a top, cape or simply a bag - can lift your look instantly.

Alberta Ferretti and Damir Doma are offering jackets and trousers in blue hues with a metallic sheen, while Giambattista Valli's collection for Moncler Gamme Rouge has a very feminine soul and elegance with light golden metallic glows.

If you're looking to make a unique statement of metallic in this season, then focus on the pastel metallics that make a delicate addition to the trend's otherwise blunt color palette. Examples can be found in Roccobarocco collection.

However, metallic silver is still a favorite for metallic fans. Designers like Alexander Wang and Donna Karen have opted for this classic metallic tone, giving a futuristic aura and daring character. A Jonathan Saunders metallic skirt is mirror-effect silver, glittering with rainbow reflections.

And designers have expanded the range of sparkling colors and shining fabrics by presenting various pieces and accessories in different colors with a shine on sheen.

Glitter and shine also can be seen in everything from belts, shoes and handbags to jewelry, eye shadow and nail polish.

A word of warning though to fans of all things shiny. Various combinations of metallic looks are chic today but it is incredibly easy to overdo it and end up looking more tacky than fashionable.

To avoid glitter overkill, keep metallic wardrobe pieces simple, pick one or two pieces to wear then keep the rest of your outfit complementary.

And if you don't feel comfortable wearing shine on clothes, try starting out with metallic eye shadow to give a dazzling boost to your everyday look.
