Luxury thrives in Shanghai

THE craziness for fashion shows no signs of slowing down in Shanghai.

Last week, one of fashion's most outspoken figures, Franca Sozzani, editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia, was in town to learn more about the local fashion landscape.

On Tuesday night, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana took the city by storm by throwing an "Express Yourself" party at the Dolce & Gabbana boutique on Bund 6. Many local celebrities welcomed the designers wearing their finest Dolce frocks. Sozzani, in her Dolce dress, also attended the party.

Shanghai's waterfront is growing in popularity as the city's most prestigious address for luxury brands. This month, upscale shopping is becoming even more stylish and exclusive. The day after the D&G party, the Peninsula Arcade, in association with Harper's Bazaar magazine, hosted the Celebration of Craftsmanship gala evening. The night included fashion shows, demonstrations of luxury craftsmanship and unique in-store experiences, plus fine cuisine and drinks. It was packed with VIPs and was like a "fashion industry night out."

Chanel presented an exclusive preview of its upcoming 2012 Cruise Collection in the Peninsula boutique. The Cruise collection offers shoppers looking for something new before the delivery of the spring collection.

Besides, Italian brand Canali brought its Italian master tailor, offering a made to measure service for two days.

Shanghai Tang provided a 15 percent discount on its special "Imperial Tailoring" collection show pieces until yesterday. Ralph Lauren offered exclusive bespoke personalization services for its Ricky Bag.

The month long Celebration of Craftsmanship runs until December 9. During this promotion, shoppers in The Peninsula Arcade, home to 28 brands, will see previews of next season's hottest lines.

Beyond shopping for the festive season, style followers should not miss Momenti di Emporio, an exhibition held by Emporio Armani at its Peninsula boutique to showcase the brand's iconic images over the past three decades.

Another on-going exhibition worth checking out is Jaeger-LeCoultre "Reverso 80th Anniversary Exhibition" at Plaza 66. As the fifth stop of the watch company's four-month global exhibition tour, the Shanghai exhibit showcases some legendary Reverso timepieces. The rarely seen antique watches include the original 1931 Reverso men and women watches, the 1936 valuable enameling pieces along with the fine 2011 collection.

As a tribute to Chinese culture, the brand has launched a personalized watch for the Reverso 80th anniversary exhibition tour in China. The Grande Reverso Ultra Thin has a dragon pattern engraved on the back. The exhibit has a special sale area for visitors who want to reserve a watch onsite.

Luxury shopping in Beijing is also becoming more stylish and exclusive. The Sanlitun North Village has upped the ante with the recent boutique openings of Maison Martin Margiela, Marni and Alexander McQueen.
