Benefits seen of drones in farming

Agriculture drones, which are used for seed planting as well as fertilizers and for pesticides, have big potential globally, professional agriculture drone vendor XAG said yesterday.

Guangzhou-based XAG aims to offer the drones to “next-generation farmers” and “make agriculture smarter.”

Currently, XAG’s drones are used in 38 counties and regions covering 310 million mu (206.67 square kilometers), and accounting for 0.3 percent of global agriculture acreage.

“It means a lot of market space and new drone application to accelerate digital farming and empower next-generation farmers globally,” Peng Bin, founder and CEO of XAG, told the company’s annual tech conference in Guangzhou.

By September 20, over 42,000 XAG drones were in use, serving over 6.4 million farmers.

The company also displayed the latest model XAG XP2020 yesterday, with added features like precision spraying, water-proof, enhanced battery and positioning, obstacle avoidance, night operation and terrain tracing.

Different from other Chinese drones with business in both consumer and industrial clients, XAG focuses on agriculture industry.

The development of Chinese agriculture has depended on its integration with digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence, 5G and smart manufacture. The industry and integration need firms like XAG, said Zhang Shixian, professor of the Chinese Academy of School Sciences.
