Huawei grows despite US

Huawei鈥檚 smartphone business continued to grow in the first quarter, despite the US tech lockdown and the COVID-19 outbreak, the company said yesterday.

It is establishing its own ecosystem with new products, including its new P40 smartphone with improved camera features, a new-tech charger, high-definition map services and smart screen TV.

Huawei鈥檚 business 鈥渟lightly grew鈥 globally in the first quarter, while the industry was facing a slump, said Richard Yu, president of Huawei鈥檚 consumer business group.

Yu said Huawei鈥檚 smartphone business had dropped in overseas markets, facing challenges such as the COVID-19 outbreak and the ban on Google offering services for Huawei devices.

But business in China had 鈥渞ecovered rapidly.鈥

Consumer business, including smartphones and smart devices, contributed the biggest share of total revenue in 2019 鈥 467.3 billion yuan (US$66.8 billion), up 34 percent year on year.

The company sold 240 million smartphones last year.

Huawei鈥檚 P40 has a starting price of 4,188 yuan.
