Huawei unveils a chip off the new block

China’s Huawei Technologies, the world’s leading telecommunications hardware company and second biggest smartphone maker, yesterday unveiled a new server and self-developed chip.

The move reduces its reliance on imports and gives it a range of chips covering smartphones, artificial intelligence applications and servers.

The latest chip is the Kunpeng 920 and the server is called TaiShan.

The new chip is an ARM-based server CPU with a top level 7-nanometer industrial processor.

It features enhanced performance, bandwidth, power efficiency and system architecture to suit data centers and cloud applications, Huawei said.

“Currently, the diversity of applications and data is driving heterogeneous computing requirements,” said Huawei’s chief marketing strategy officer William Xu.

Global data volume will jump 18 times by 2025 from last year, which creates diversified demand for data centers and cloud and wearable computing, Xu added.

Last year, more than 120 billion ARM-based chips were sold globally, mainly in smartphones. There will be another 100 billion for new applications within several years, says Huawei.

The TaiShan central processing unit targeting business is the highest technological development level of a tech company.

With the release of the TaiShan CPU, Huawei joins the club of companies producing their own chips that includes Intel, IBM and Qualcomm.

Besides the new Kunpeng, Huawei has developed the Kirin processor for smartphones and the Ascend series for artificial intelligence computing.

Huawei sold more than 900,000 servers with Intel chips in 2018, 12 times more than in 2012.

The new CPU and servers won’t influence long-term partnerships with Intel as they target different markets.

Huawei is “very confident” about sales of the new TaiShan servers in overseas markets, especially Europe and Asia.
